High-Fat Food In Pregnancy Triggers Enduring Changes In Offspring’s Brain

High-fat maternal food intake can lead to lifetime alterations in the unborn offspring’s brains, according to the latest research carried out at MedUni Vienna’s Center for Brain Research.

When a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid-rich diet is consumed by pregnant women, an excess amount of endogenous cannabinoids (endocannabinoids) are produced by their bodies. This impacts the fetal organism and can harm healthy brain networks’ development. Such type of mechanism might be linked to diverse health issues including schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, and ADHD. Moreover, the later modifications in eating habits might not be able to reverse this damage. In the recent research available in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, the scientists accessed the impact of high-fat (full of polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acids) food intake throughout the pregnancy on the growth of the fetal brain.

Excess of endocannabinoids is produced by the mother and baby if the mother consumes high-fat food during pregnancy. Moreover, there is a probability of the transfer of endocannabinoids from the mother to the fetus. This can put an excess burden on the related cannabinoid receptors in the brain of the fetus and shrink their signaling ability. It leads to the failure of nerve cells to precisely integrate into the brain and complete their eventual activities. Moreover, the research also highlighted that these alterations cannot be reversed. It can impact the offspring for a lifetime and lead to the development of psychiatric disarrays in them.

On a similar note, a recent study highlighted that consuming a high-protein diet might impact diabetic and morbidly overweight individuals. The research adds that replacing a huge number of carbohydrates with protein can impact the kidney function of overweight and diabetic patients. And this risk is increased in individuals who are unaware of their disease condition. Besides, the consumption of a protein-rich diet can also lead to diverse kidney dysfunctions and glomerular hyperfiltration.
